Power to the Pixel (PttP) has announced the 32 cross-media projects from across Europe, the US, Canada, the Middle East, Australia and South America selected to participate in The Pixel Market (Oct 8-9).

The two-day finance and co-production market is run as part of 8th Power to the Pixel: The Cross-Media Forum (Oct 7-10), held in association with the 58th BFI London Film Festival (Oct 8-19).

From the 32 teams, PttP has selected the top eight to compete for the ARTE International Prize for The Pixel Market, a €6,000 ($7,800) award sponsored by the French/German broadcaster.

The producers and creators will present to a panel of international commissioning executives, financiers and experts who will use these projects as a backdrop to discuss successful finance strategies, sustainable business models and the companies actively investing in new media.

The winning team will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on Oct 9.

The eight projects in contention for ARTE International Prize for The Pixel Market include The Infinity Engine, an online interactive website, feature-length film and instalation by multi-awarding winning artist and filmmaker Lynn Hershman and Lisa Cortés, executive producer behind Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA winning film Precious.

Signe Byrge Sørensen, producer of doc The Act of Killing, also attends this year with interactive web-documentary On Screen Off Record.

Rebecca O’Brien, long-time producer of Ken Loach, attends with The Flickering Flame; while director-producer Robert Cibis of OVALfilm attends with How to Kill Uffie, a project from The Pixel Lab 2013.

Nordic delegation

The Cross-Media Forum will also host a Nordic Delegation composed of around 40 Nordic funds, businesses and production companies including Nordisk Film & TV Fond, SWIM, Danish Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute, Norwegian Film Institute, Finnish Film Foundation and the Icelandic Film Centre.

At the conference on Oct 7, three businesses from the region will present examples of successful models for media innovation.

Speakers include Tero Kaukomaa from Iron Sky Universe; Lasse Mäkelä from pan-Nordic crowd-investment platform Invesdor; and Mikko Pöllä, group creative director of Rovio Entertainment (Angry Birds).

Nine of the 32 Pixel Market projects are from the Nordic region and will be showcased at the Pixel Market Finance Forum Day on Oct 8 in two special Nordic Focus panels.

Liz Rosenthal, PttP founder and CEO, said selecting this year’s projects “was a hard task for all the right reasons”.

“The quality and innovation of the projects applying has developed exponentially over the five years of The Pixel Market and our selection demonstrates that engaging audiences across new media formats and multiple platforms plays an essential part of both established and emerging producers strategies to achieve impact and reach,” she added.

Prizes

The projects will also be in the running to win one of three additional prizes:

  • the new IFP Pixel Market Prize – automatic selection to the 2015 No Borders Project Market during Independent Film Week, NYC, with free accommodation in NYC for four nights and free accreditation;

  • the inaugural beActive Pixel Market Prize for scripted content - a cash prize of £2,500 ($4,100);

  • the Cinekid Pixel Market Prize (for projects aimed at 4-14 year-olds) - automatic selection for the 2014 Cinekid for Professionals co-production market in Amsterdam in October, free accreditation to the festival with return travel and accommodation.
