Mike Mills, who shot to fame with festival hits Beginners and Thumbsucker, will direct the nostalgic trip back to the 1970’s.

Annapurna’s Megan Ellison will produce alongside Anne Carey of Archer Gray and Youree Henley.

Production has been earmarked for later this year in Southern California on the story of a boy growing up in Santa Barbara whose worldview is shaped by the women in his life.

20th Century Women takes place at a tumultuous time during the final stretch of President Carter’s tenure as punk was entering the scene and the oil crisis rocked the global economy.

“The film is an ode to the women who raised me; my mom, my sisters, the girls I was in love with or looked up to at school and in the punk rock scene where I really learned about the world,” said Mills.

Chris Corabi and Vanessa Fung negotiated the deal on behalf of Annapurna. UTA represents Mills.
