The picture reunites von Trier with actors Stellan Skarsgard, who has appeared in a number of his films include Breaking the Waves as the paralysed protagonist Jan, and Gainsbourg, who previously appeared in Antichrist and Melancholia.

Gainsbourg, will play a broken woman who recounts her erotic life to an old man over the course of a night.

Other companies attached to the project, being produced by Peter Aalbaek Jensen at Zentropa, include Paris-based Slot Machine which has been involved in nearly all of von Trier’s features to date.

Arte also announced it was boarding Stéphane Demoustier’s first time feature Terre Battue, starring Olivier Gourmet as a failed businessman with a young tennis champion son.

The father and son are united in their determination to succeed in their separate fields. Valerie Bruni-Tedeschi and Xavier Beauvois will also feature in the cast.

The picture, which shoots this summer, is a co-production between French Les Films Velvet and the Dardenne brothers’ Liege-based Les Films du Fleuve.

To date, Demoustier has made a number of award-winning shorts including Urban Jungle (2009), Week-end (2010) and Bad Gones, which screened in the Tribeca shorts programme this year.
