The French videogame publisher wants to bring some of the most successful video games ever sold to film and TV screens.

France’s gaming giant Ubisoft has created a new department, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, to adapt its successful games such as Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell,Raving Rabbids or other franchises for film and TV properties.

Said to be the third independent videogame publisher in Europe and the third in the US as well, the Gallic company will have its new movie branch managed by Jean-Julien Baronnet. The former COO of EuropaCorp was involved in that mini-major’s move into TV.

Also part of the managing team, Didier Lupfer, producer of Gainsbourg, will head the production and development departments. Jean de Riviere who also recently left EuropaCorp after having a career at Disney France will be handling international distribution and marketing.

Projects already announced include a TV series based on Raving Rabbids.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures plans to use its 23 in-house production studios located in 17 countries — which will be one of its strongest assets, as its software can also be used for developing each project.

It is expected that top US/international directors will be approached to direct the company’s first movies, based on Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon.
