Renowned Spanish director/editor De La Madrid to make thriller Chronicle Beyond The Border

The Devil’s Backbone editor Luis De La Madrid Soria is set to produce a Spanish thriller called Chronicle Beyond The Border (Cronica De Otro Confin) through his new outfit Cine De Garage.

Andre Cruz Shiraiwa, De La Madrid’s partner at Cine De Garage, will direct Chronicle Beyond The Border, which is the company’s first fictional feature film.

Based on a script by Aurora Sulli, the film will tell the story of a mother and daughter who attempt to flee their war torn country, but in the process are forced to endure a refugee camp on the border, which is actually a reality TV show.

The producers have already secured development funding from the Spanish Film Institute (ICAA), the Catalan film subsidy organisation (ICIC) and regional broadcaster TV3, and leading outfit Escandalo Films has joined the project as co-producers with Antonia Nava, former director general of Filmax International, onboard as an executive producer.

“We are starting pre-production this month with the intention of beginning the shooting in Spain at the end of this year,” De La Madrid confirmed to ScreenDaily. “We are also shooting a teaser trailer, which we want to present at the Cannes market where we hope to close some pre-sales and possibly find other co-production partners.”

They are currently looking for quality local actors for the project with the help of top casting director Pep Armengol.

De La Madrid has edited several key Spanish titles over the past 15 years, most notably with Spanish studio Filmax, including Jaume Balaguero’s Darkness and Brad Anderson’s The Machinist, and he also directed The Nun, which was co-produced by Lionsgate and Future Films.

“[At Cine De Garage] we are currently focused on genre projects, but not horrors, independent and auteur cinema, with elements of science fiction,” adds De La Madrid.
