Jonathan Demme will direct Meryl Streep as a hard-rocking checkout lady in Ricki And The Flash for Tom Rothman’s TriStar Productions. Diablo Cody wrote the screenplay.

It is understood TriStar Productions prevailed over The Weinstein Company and a number of other studios in a competitive auction.

The company has lined up an autumn start while Streep familiarises herself with the demands of playing rock guitar.

Marc Platt and Mason Novick are producing.

Streep will play a rock ‘n’ roll lover who sacrificed her family in pursuit of her tattered dreams and gets the chance to make everything right.

“We aspire to be the best roadies ever,” said TriStar Productions chairman Rothman.

Platt, who collaborated with Demme on Philadelphia at TriStar, added that Cody and Streep were “two of the women I admire most.”
