Participant Media and Alfonso Cuarón are teaming up on a new untitled project that will mark the Oscar-winner’s first Mexico-set film since his 2001 breakout Y Tu Mamá También.

Production is scheduled to begin in Mexico this autumn on the project, which chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early 1970s.

Cuarón wrote the screenplay and produces with Gabriela Rodriguez and Nicolás Celis, who served as executive producer on Amat Escalante’s TIFF Vanguard selection The Untamed.

Jeff Skoll, David Linde and Jonathan King of Participant Media serve as executive producers.

“This film is close to my heart and my first in Mexico since Y Tu Mamá También,” said Cuarón. “I am thrilled to be making it with the Participant team.”

“Alfonso is a master storyteller, who breaks cultural boundaries around the world by skilfully connecting audiences through the power of cinema,” said Participant CEO Linde, who worked with Cuarón on Jonas Cuaron’s Desierto. “We are elated to be joining him on this film.”

Participant has four films in the festival: Deepwater Horizon, Denial, A Monster Calls, and Neruda.
