Participant Media founder Jeff Skoll on Wednesday [20] launched the Jake Eberts Fellowship for Social Impact Filmmaking.

The company will underwrite the honour for five years. The fellowship is named in recognition of the late producer Jake Eberts and will benefit students at UCLA’s School Of Theater, Film And Television whose stories “inspire and compel social change.”

The annual initiative will provide six graduate students from the university with a full-time, paid experience at Participant Media to actively participate in the creation of socially relevant content.

“Jake was a role model, a mentor, and embodied the values that are at the very core of Participant’s mission,” said Skoll. “He was an enthusiastic champion from the earliest days and a dear friend. I can’t think of a better way to honour his memory than through this fellowship programme.”

“We are honoured to be the home for this extraordinary new fellowship program for social impact filmmaking that pays tribute to Jake Eberts and the humanistic ideals that underscore all of his magnificent films,” said Dean Teri Schwartz.

Eberts died last September aged 71. He produced or served as executive producer on Dances With Wolves, Chckcen Run, Two Brothers and A River Runs Through It, among others.
