The studio has acquired the Material sci-fi spec script from Christina Hodson.
Material principals Tobey Maguire and Matthew Plouffe brought the project to the studio and will produce what is being conceived as the first in a possible trilogy centred on two female characters.
Hannah Minghella, president of production for Columbia Pictures, brokered the deal and will oversee the project.
Material is on a roll after Maguire starrer Pawn Sacrifice premiered in Toronto and sold to Bleecker Street.

Hodson burst on to the scene when her screenplay Shut In became one of the top names on the 2012 Black List, prompting Lava Bear to snap it up.
Her script Seed landed on The Black List in 2013 and will be produced by Marty Bowen and Peter Safran. She recently wrote the erotic thriller Unforgettable for Warner Bros with Amma Asante on board to direct.
Material is in post-production on Z For Zachariah starring Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine. The producers also have The 5th Wave at Sony with Chloë Grace Moretz and Liev Schreiber set to star.
