Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet are teaming up on a feature version of the hit Sega game.

In a press release Sony said producers on the hybrid CG animation / live-action project were aiming to capture the game’s irreverent tone and will feature popular characters from the game such as Dr. Eggman.

Evan Susser and Van Robichaux co-writing Sonic The Hedgehog and Neal H Moritz produces through Original Film along with Marza’s Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi. Toby Ascher will serve as an executive producer.

The Sonic franchise has generated more than $1bn in revenues and sold more than 140m games.

“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base,” said Columbia Pictures president of production Hannah Minghella, who oversees for Sony with Andrea Giannetti.

Marza Animation Planet is owned by Japan’s Sega Sammy Holdings and plans to produce one feature per year.
