Shooting began on location in the UK last week; Meryl Streep comments on role as first still of her as Margaret Thatcher is released.
Phyllida Lloyd’s biopic of Margaret Thatcher The Iron Lady, starring 16-time Oscar nominee Meryl Streep as the former UK Prime Minister, is underway in the UK.
Jim Broadbent plays Thatcher’s husband Denis, with their young selves played by Alexandra Roach and Harry Lloyd.
Speaking about the challenge of capturing the infamously steely Thatcher - who was the UK’s first and only woman Prime Minister - Streep said: “The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge. I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses - I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own!”
The Abi Morgan (Sex Traffic, Brick Lane, White Girl)-scripted drama is produced by Damian Jones (The History Boys, Adulthood) and executive produced by Francois Ivernel and Cameron McCracken for Pathé, Tessa Ross for Film4 and Adam Kulick for Goldcrest.
The film is a Pathé, Film4, UK Film Council presentation with the participation of Canal+ and Cine Cinema in association with Goldcrest Film Production LLP of a DJ Films Production.
The cast also features Olivia Colman, Nicholas Farrell, Susan Brown, Roger Allam, Anthony Head, Julian Wadham, Pip Torrens, Nick Dunning, Richard E Grant, David Westhead, Angus Wright and John Sessions.
Pathé will distribute in France, with Fox distributing in the UK on behalf of Pathé.
Pathé International is handling international sales.
