Spanish outfit Tornasol Films, producers of Oscar winner The Secret In Their Eyes, will work on an English-language murder mystery film with director Daniel Monzon, hot off his huge success with Cell 211.

The as-yet-untitled project is in the early stages of development with Monzon currently writing the script, which will be an English-language murder mystery in the vein of Agatha Christie.

This will be familiar territory for Tornasol, which produced Alex De La Iglesia’s English-language The Oxford Murders, starring John Hurt and Elijah Wood, which  took a healthy $12.5m in Spain through Warner Bros and sold all over the world.

Daniel Monzon’s stock has risen considerably since the phenomenal success of his prison drama Cell 211, starring Luis Tosar and Alberto Ammann, which made $20m at the Spanish box office through Paramount and picked up eight Goya Awards. Furthermore, CBS Films has optioned the US remake rights to the film with Paul Haggis set to write and produce.

Cell 211 was produced by Morena Films, Vaca Films, Telecinco Cinema and France’s La Fabrique 2, and saw Ammann play a newly recruited prison guard forced to confront a riot led by Tosar’s character on his first day of work.

Tornasol Films is also in development on a thriller with Argentinian outfit Haddock Films called Everyone Has A Plan, directed by Ana Piterbarg, which is likely to shoot in both Argentina and Spain.
