Random House Children’s Screen Entertainment has optioned worldwide rights for teen novel The Kissing Booth.

Acquired from author Beth Reekles, there are now plans to develop the book and its sequels into a “major teen film or TV production with America as our first market,” according to Andrew Cole-Bulgin, partner and head of film and TV at RHCSE.

Originally self-published online, it was issued as an e-book last December by Random House Children’s Publishers UK, generating 19 million reads.

Set in the US, the story centres on a never-been-kissed teenager who comes face-to-face with her secret crush in a kissing booth at a school carnival.

Reekles second book, Rolling Dice, is published next month.
