Jeremy Renner and a new screenwriter have been signed up for a fifth instalment of the ‘Bourne’ franchise, it has been announced.

Renner will reprise his role as Aaron Cross, the CIA agent from The Bourne Legacy, released in 2012.

Producers are Frank Marshall, Captivate Entertainment’s Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner.

Marshall produced The Bourne Legacy, which was directed by Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote the film and its three previous instalments.

The screenwriter for the fifth film in the franchise is Anthony Peckham whose other credits include Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Clint Eastwood’s Nelson Mandela film, Invictus.

Matt Damon has previously stated that he will not return to his role as Jason Bourne without director Paul Greengrass, who made the second and third films.

The Bourne Legacy grossed $276 million worldwide.
