Romanian filmmaker Adrian Sitaru [pictured], known on the international festival circuit for such films as Hooked and Best Intentions, is now preparing his English language debut with an adaptation of Fiona Campbell’s acclaimed novel Death Of A Salaryman.

The film centres on a reserved family man and researcher at a TV corporation whose life changes dramatically when he tries to survive losing his job on his 40th birthday.

With an estimated budget of £4m, the production by Mara Adina’s UK-based Vernon Films will be co-produced with Romania’s Monica Lazurean-Gorgan of 4 Proof Film who previously worked with Sitaru on his feature films Best Intentions and Domestic.

Moreover, Vernon Films and 4 Proof Film had already collaborated on Ilinca Calugureanu’s documentary Chuck Norris vs. Communism.

Lazurean-Gorgan was Romania’s Producer on the Move in Cannes last month and participated in the festival’s L’Ateiler of the Cinéfondation with Adina Pintilie’s Touch Me Not which she is planning as a four-country co-production.

Meanwhile, Anca Damian, whose animated documentary Crulic – The Path To Beyond won the Grand Prix in Annecy last weekend, is now in post-production on her English language debut, the contemporary urban tale A Very Unsettled Summer, based on a short story by Irish-born writer Philip Ó Ceallaigh who has been living in Bucharest for several years.

The co-production between Damian’s Aparte Film and UK producer Grant Keir’s Faction North Ltd. came about after the two met at an edition of the Connecting Cottbus East-West co-production market in Germany.

Summer was shot on location in Prague and Bucharest between April and May of this year with an international cast including Jamie Sives, Ana Ularu, Kim Bodnia and Diana Cavillioti.

Backing for the postproduction work came from the Swedish regional fund Film i Väst.
