The first films to compete for the Golden Shell at the 2018 San Sebastian Film Festival (Sept 21-29) have been announced.
They include Claire Denis’ English-language sci-fi title High Life, which stars Juliette Binoche, André Benjamin and Robert Pattinson, Naomi Kawase’s Vision, which also stars Binoche alongside Masatoshi Nagase, and South Korean director Kim Jee-woon’s Illang: The Wolf Brigade , a remake of anime Jin-Roh from Ghost In The Shell writer Mamoru Oshii. Kim’s I Saw The Devil competed at the festival in 2010.
Chilean director Valeria Sarmiento also returns to the festival with the France-Portugual co-production The Black Book, inspired by the novel Livro Negro de Padre Dinis by Camilo Castelo Branco.
A further Latin American title in competition is Rojo, from Buenos Aires-based Benjamín Naishtat whose debut History Of Fear competed in Berlin in 2014. Rojo stars Darío Grandinetti, Andrea Frigerio and Alfredo Castro and is set in 1970s Argentina, on the eve of the military dictatorship.
Markus Schleinzer, whose Michael screened in competition at Cannes in 2011, presents his follow-up Angelo at San Sebastián. It stars Makita Samba, Alba Rohrwacher and Larisa Faber.
The final film announced today was The Innocent, the second film from Swiss director Simon Jaquemet. His debut War premiered in the New Directors strand at the festival in 2014.
All the films of the Official Section will be announced in the next few weeks.
