Fantasy film festival to include world premieres of Mindscape and The Returned as well as a focus on high end TV drama.

The 46th Sitges Film Festival (Oct 11-20) is set to launch in Spain tonight with Grand Piano, a thriller directed by Eugenio Mira, starring Elijah Wood and John Cusack.

It will kick off nearly 10 days of fantasy films including features shot in Spain.

These will include the world premiere of Mindscape, the feature directorial debut of Jorge Dorado, who has previously worked as an assistant director on films such Pedro Almodovar’s Bad Education and Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone.

The English-language thriller stars Mark Strong as a man with the ability to enter peoples’ memories who takes on the case of a troubled 16-year-old girl, played by Taissa Farmiga, to determine whether she is a sociopath or a victim of trauma.

Manuel Carballo’s The Returned (Retornados) will also receive its world premiere at Sitges. It is set in a post-zombie world, where the infected live normal lives but their retroviral drug is running out. Produced by Toronto’s Ramaco Media, sales are handled by Filmax.

Familiar faces at the fantasy fest will return to introduce their films. Directors in attendance will include Terry Gilliam with The Zero Theorem, Eli Roth with The Green Inferno and Alejandro Jodorowsky with The Dance of Reality.

Horror master Takashi Miike will receive a tribute along with Renny Harlin and composer Pino Donaggio.

Other titles in the line-up include sequel Machete Kills from Robert Rodriguez; All Cheerleaders Die from co-directors Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson; Masahiro Hosoda’s animated Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods; and Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swann III

The new wave of fantasy TV series will also be given prominence at the festival with titles including The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Bates Motel
