Next chapter in the fantasy saga to be directed by Rian Johnson, who is shown directing the final shot from The Force Awakens in a video announcing start of production.

Star Wars: Episode VIII, began principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London today, Disney has confirmed.

The as-yet-untitled follow-up to blockbuster The Force Awakens is written and directed by Rian Johnson and marks the return of cast including Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. 

New cast members will include Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is scheduled for release December 15, 2017 after being pushed back from its initial release date of May 26.

The Force Awakens, directed by JJ Abrams, has made $2.03bn since its release on December 18.
