EXCLUSIVE: Cold War espionage doc has been backed by Ffilm Cymru Wales and BBC Wales.

My Grandfather The Spy

UK sales outfit Starline Entertainment has taken worldwide rights to Dave Evans’s investigative documentary My Grandfather The Spy.

Co-directed by Martin Scanlan, the film follows Evans’s [pictured in the film] attempt to unearth secrets from his family’s past – to solve the mystery behind his grandfather’s frequent trips behind the Iron Curtain during the height of the Cold War.

The project was developed through the New Discoveries programme at The Balkan Documentary Center, and had support from Ffilm Cymru Wales, as well as BBC Wales. It received a special mention at Kosovo’s DokuFest in 2015 and was selected to participate in the Distribution Rewired market at Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2016.

Production is scheduled to be completed in December this year.

Starline’s director of acquisitions, Piers Nightingale commented: “Life – not least family life – is so often stranger than fiction, and when Dave came in to tell us his extraordinary story, we were completely transfixed,”. He added, “With his and Martin’s combined filmmaking talents evident from the footage so far, we can’t wait to bring this thrilling documentary to the international market.”
