Joachim Trier’s first English-language feature, starring Isabelle Huppert, Gabriel Byrne and Jesse Eisenberg, has been postponed just a month before shooting due to financial difficulties.
A month before principal photography was due in the US and Germany for Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s $6.6m (NOK 52m) Louder Than Bombs, Norwegian production outfit Motlys has postponed the project indefinitely, having failed to provide the full financing for the Norwegian-Danish-French-US co-production.
“Unfortunately we could not make it in time, and have accordingly decided to end the ongoing preparations in New York – we are sorry we came to this conclusion so close to the start, and would like to apologise to the director, actors and everyone else involved,” said a statement from Norwegian producer Sigve Endrésen’s company.
“However, we are confidentthat the project will be realised in the near future”.
French actress Isabelle Huppert was to star in Trier’s first English-language feature, with Irish actor Gabriel Byrne and US actor Jesse Eisenberg.
The family drama revolves around the character of a famous, late war photographer played by Huppert. On the eve of a retrospective of work, some three years after her untimely death, her husband and two sons discover an unsettling secret from her past.
Byrne was to play the husband and Eisenberg one of the sons.
Supported by $1.7m (NOK 13.3m) production funding from the Norwegian Film Institute, Louder than Bombs would be staged by Motlys with Denmark’s Nimbus Film, France’s Memento Films, Germany’s Majade Films and Albert Berger-Ron Yerxa from Boda Fide Productions (US). Memento handles French distribution and international sales.
