The 3rd Fashion in Film Festival is underway in London, with a special focus on costume in European and American cinema.

The programme, entitled Birds Of Paradise, includes a range of screenings and events which will be hosted across the BFI Southbank, Barbican, Tate Modern and other London venues, showcasing different aspects of costume in film.

Screenings will include Albert Capellani’s Red Lantern, Jean Durand’s l’Île d’amour, Alexandre Volkoff’sSecrets of the East and the recent restoration of Joë Francis’sLa Revue des Revues.

A panel discussion chaired by Fashion in Film’s director Marketa Uhlirova will also feature influential early film scholars Vanessa Toulmin and Giovanna Fossati.

The festival will also feature screenings of underground films by Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, José Rodriguez-Soltero, Steven Arnold and James Bidgood, as well as a specially commissioned installation at London’s Somerset House by the Jason Bruges Studio.

London’s major, Boris Johnson, said he was “delighted to endorse the 3rd Fashion in Film Festival which will welcome leading figures from the worlds of fashion and film to our city. London is well established as a centre for cutting edge fashion and film-making and I hope a new generation of designers and film-makers will be inspired by this unique event.”

The festival will run until 12 December.
