Screen Star of Tomorrow Fyzal Boulifa won the Best Film prize for The Curse, Adam Etherington picked up the Best Cinematography award for The World Turns.

The Fujifilm Shorts 2012 short film competition has announced its winners, with Fyzal Boulifa’s The Curse taking the Best Film prize and Adam Etherington winning the Best Cinematography award for his work on The World Turns. Boulifa was named one of Screen’s Stars of Tomorrow for 2012.

Produced by Gavin Humphries of Quark Films and Karim Debbagh, and backed by Film4 and the BFI, The Curse won the Premier Prix Illy for Short Filmmaking in Cannes this year. It centres around a woman who is hounded by villagers after she is discovered to have had an affair with an older man.

Etherington’s The World Turns centres around a van driver trying to rebuild his life after an accident.

The competition, which is now in its fourth year, requires all submissions to be shot on Fujifilm Motion Picture film stock by UK and Ireland based filmmakers. From the initial entries, the judges selected 10 final nominations, from which the overall winners were chosen.

“All of the finalists demonstrated a distinct ability to craft a narrative story, and in many cases deliver a film with a wonderful aesthetic. There was barely a cigarette paper between the finalists, and all of the entrants should be very proud of their achievements,” said The King’s Speech producer who sat on the judging panel.

The winners will receive £2,000 worth of Fujifilm Motion Picture stock in either 16mm or 35mm amongst other prizes.
