The documentary festival is teaming up with crowdfunding website IndieGoGo to promote alternative ways of financing films.

Sheffield Doc/Fest is partnering up with IndieGoGo in a bid to promote crowdfunding projects and opportunities to European investors and filmmakers.

As part of the multi year partnership, Sheffield Doc/Fest will select “crowdfunding fellows”, from pre-existing IndieGoGo projects and promote them throughout the international documentary community. The first five projects have been selected and will be hosted on IndieGoGo.com’s partner page.

Sheffield Doc/Fest held its first crowdfunding pitch at its 2010 edition, which raised $2,448 (£1,500) for Stephen Burton’s winning project This is Me, which has since moved into production. This year’s upcoming edition, which runs for the first time in June (8-12), will have a special “crowdfunding day” and will feature Doc/Fest’s second crowdfunding pitch.

”At Doc/Fest we’re passionate about the potential of new technology and new opportunities for funding and distribution,” said Charlie Phillips, director of the festival’s market.

“Crowdfunding raises finance and builds a community for film projects. It’s the future of collaboration between filmmakers, who can support each other outside of the constraints of both public and private finance. We’re delighted to be working with IndieGoGo to bring these opportunities to a wider community.”
