The 14th UK Jewish Film Festival (UKJFF) will open on Nov 4 with a UK preview of John Madden’s thriller The Debt, starring Helen Mirren as a former Mossad agent who captured a notorious Nazi war criminal.
The 2010 festival programme was launched today at an event in London’s West End. The launch was hosted by UKJFF’s Ambassador, actress Tracy-Ann Oberman, who screened a short film she had made featuring Graham Norton, Brian Ferry and Davina McCall simultaneously telling a Jewish joke.
The festival line-up is made up of 66 films from countries including Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel and the US. It also includes 35 UK premieres.
New for this year will be the festival’s first comedy strand, Comedy Clash, which will address the role comedy can play in tackling racism and prejudice.The strand will include the UK premiere of French film He’s My Girl, about a gay Jewish musician (Antoine de Caunes), who falls for an Arab cross-dresser, as well as a screening of Jewish comedian Joan Rivers documentary, Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work.
Announcing the UKJFF, founder and director, Judy Ironside, said this year’s festival, which runs until 21 November, had “something for everyone, young and old, Jewish and non-Jewish, those who want to be intellectually challenged and those looking for a little light relief.”
