Oscar nominated for Terms of Endearment.

Production designer and producer Polly Platt died July 27 at the age of 72. Her daughter has confirmed that Platt died at her Brooklyn, NY home from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

As a production designer, Platt worked on sets for films including The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon and What’s Up Doc?, directed by her former husband Peter Bogdanovich. Her other credits include A Star Is Born, The Bad News Bears and The Witches of Eastwick.

Platt also worked with James L Brooks, as executive VP of his production company Gracie Films, producing or executive producing films such as Broadcast News, Say Anything and Bottle Rocket.

She received an Oscar nomination for best art director for Brooks’ Terms of Endearment in 1983.

She was also a screenwriter, working on 1978’s Pretty Baby and 1999’s A Map Of The World, and co-writing Bogdanovich’s Targets.

She was the first female art director in Art Directors Guild.

Platt had recently executive produced the documentary Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, which played in Cannes.

She is reported to have just finished writing her memoirs.
