CHINA BOX OFFICE: Sequel slips past Dragon Blade and Wolf Totem in second week of Chinese New Year holiday.

Wong Jing’s From Vegas To Macau 2 edged past Dragon Blade and Wolf Totem to top the China box office in the second week of the Chinese New Year holiday, grossing $69.78m for a cumulative gross of $113.71m.

Jean-Jacques Annaud’s Wolf Totem took second position in the chart with $47.24m over the week (February 23-March 2) for a cume of $80.09m.

Dragon Blade, which topped the box office over the Chinese New Year weekend, came in third with $45.88m and has grossed $101.58m since opening on the first day of the holiday on Feb 19. 

Peter Pau and Zhao Tianyu’s fantasy epic Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal grossed $27.18m for fourth position in the chart and has so far taken $58.97m

Big Hero 6 was the first Hollywood film to open following the holiday blackout on foreign films, grossing $13.81m in its opening two days. It was followed by local reality TV series spin-off Where Are We Going, Dad? 2, which came in sixth with $13.78m for a cume of $34.84m after 11 days. 

Media Asia’s Triumph In The Skies took a further $10.40m for seventh position in the chart and a cume of $23.27m, also after 11 days. Emperor’s Holidays, spun off from the same TV series as Where Are We Going, Dad? 2, came in eighth with $7.96m and a cume of $17m. It was followed by local animation Boonie Bears: Mystical Winter, which took $2.87m for a cume of $47m.

Xu Jinglei’s Somewhere Only We Know managed to hang on in the top ten, despite opening before the Chinese New Year deluge of releases, grossing a further $810,000  for a cume of $45.16m after 20 days. 

China’s box office reportedly hit $650m in the month of February, outstripping the $640m gross in the US. Upcoming releases include Paddington and Jupiter Ascending, which both open this weekend.
