8th edition of the festival will also present awards to Richard Gere, John Travolta and Jerry Weintraub.

Zurich Film Festival Directors Karl Spoerri and Nadja Schildknecht have announced that celebrated German filmmaker Tom Tykwer will be honoured at this year’s festival, which runs Sept 20-30, with a special ‘A Tribute To…’ ceremony and retrospective that pays homage to his work as a filmmaker, writer, producer and composer.

Tykwer directed, wrote and produced - along with Andy and Lana Wachowski - this autumn’s highly anticipated drama Cloud Atlas, which stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant.

Tykwer has directed many other successful titles including Run Lola Run and Perfume: The Story of a Murder. Amongst other achievements, he is co-founder and partner of Berlin based production company X Filme Creative Pool GmbH, and co-founder of non-profit organization One Fine Day e.V. which supports artistic education in the ghettos of Nairobi, Kenya.

Previous recipients of the Zurich Film Festival tribute have included Oscar winners such as Roman Polanski and Paul Haggis.

This year’s festival will also see Richard Gere receive the Golden Icon award, while John Travolta will be honoured with the Golden Eye award before the opening night screening of Savages and Jerry Weintraub will receive the career achievement award.
