Norway’s complete, national digital roll out – the first in the world, including 414 screens all over the country – will be ready before next summer, a year ahead of the original schedule.

The 35mm print distribution will shortly be history, according to Norwegian cinema association, Film & Kino.

Having already signed a vpf (virtual print fee) contract with six Hollywood studios, Film & Kino’s Roar Svartberg has now negotiated a similar agreement with the country’s independent distributors, represented by SF Norge chief Guttorm Petterson.

The total digitisation budget of NOK 390 million ($66.4 million) will be shared by the cinemas, Film & Kino and the distributors whose virtual print fee will be paid for each theatrical release in a period between six and eight years, till the full investment has been covered.

Oslo’s Colosseum multiplex was the first theatre to be equipped by Unique Cinema Systems, which will modernise nine out of ten groups of theatres, leaving Region West for Nordic Digital Alliance. Provincial Namsos is last on the list.
