J Edward ‘Ted’ Shugrue has died in New York following a short illness at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was 62.

Shugrue was born in New York on Jan 8, 1950. A graduate of Wooster Academy, he attended Boston University and the University Of London where he pursued his interest in theatre and communications.

Shugrue chose to pursue a life as an entertainment executive as his father J Edward had done. Career highlights included the presidency of Loews Cineplex International, where he drove international expansion and created modern multiplexes in Spain, South Korea and Italy.

Prior to Loews, Shugrue served as evp of Sony Pictures Entertainment and headed international distribution. In 1983, he became one of the first employees at the newly formed TriStar Pictures where he was instrumental in building the distribution pipeline for TriStar, later Columbia TriStar, and served for ten years as founding president of Columbia TriStar Film Distributors International.

Earlier in his career, Shugrue served as a branch manager at 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures. He most recently served as president and CEO of Envoy Media Partners. 

Shugrue was a member of the American Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences and a director of Motion Picture Pioneers. He enjoyed a lifelong affiliation with the Will Rogers Memorial Fund and served as vice-president and director, echoing his father’s earlier involvement with the Fund.

Shugrue is survived by his wife Maeve E Shugrue (nee Burke) and his sons J Edward ‘Ned’ Shugrue, Charles G Shugrue and Justin P Shugrue.

He was also the beloved brother of John Christopher Shugrue and his wife Anne Bentley of Lafayette, California, and William Reinholdt and his wife, Ann of St Louis, Missouri.

Shugrue’s extended family included: mother-in–law Eileen M Burke, eight brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law and his many nieces and nephews: Amelia and Jack Shugrue, Heidi Reinholdt, Devin and Jasmine Burke, Brendan and Brigid Mason, Alexander, Nicholas, Christopher and Catharine Giotis, Christian Clark, Hilary and Andrew Jaffe, Isabelle, Oliver and Maximillian Burke, and Pierce and Rory Dentel.

The family will receive friends at the Graham Funeral Home, Rye, New York on Oct 5 from 7–9 pm. A memorial service is scheduled to take place on Oct 6 at 11 am St Joseph’s Chapel, Kent School, Kent, Connecticut.
