Veteran actress Marisa Paredes was the only candidate presented to take over the soon-to-be-vacated position of president of the Spanish Cinema Academy, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais.

The Academy's current president, actress Aitana Sanchez-Gijon, will vacate the post on December 17.

Catalan producer-director Antonio Chavarrias and writer-director Joaquin Oristrell were the sole nominations presented for the positions of first and second vice president, respectively, El Pais also reported. They will take over for outgoing vice presidents Ventura Pons and Andres Santana.

Paredes is best known outside Spain for her pairing with director Pedro Almodovar, for whom she has starred in films such as All About My Mother (Todo Sobre Mi Madre), The Flower Of My Secret (El Flor De Mi Secreto) and High Heels (Tacones Lejanos).

The actress, who also appeared in Italian sensation Life Is Beautiful (La Vita E Bella), recently completed shooting on Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo Del Diablo).
