The high seasadventures continued for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as it plundered an estimated $62.2m to raise the10-day tally to a staggering $258.2m.

Buena Vista's adventure sequel mustered the third biggest second weekend inhistory behind Shrek 2's $72.2mand Spider-Man's $71.4m,and stayed top ahead of the new comedies Little Man and You, Me And Dupree.

Johnny Depp and friends breezed past $200m on a record equalling eighth day andcrossed $250m on the tenth day. Now the biggest domestic performer of the year to date, Pirates 2 will surely smash through $300m infewer than 17 days, which is the current mark set by Star Wars: Episode III, en route to passing the original's $305mfinal tally.

Sony's comedy Little Man starringMarlan and Shawn Wayans opened to abysmal reviews in second place on $21.7m.Behind by a whisker on $21.3m was Universal's comedy You, Me And Dupree, which stars Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson and MattDillon and also elicited poor write-ups.

The only other new entry was Warner Independent Pictures' Philip K Dickadaptation A Scanner Darkly, the animated sci-fi mystery starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr and Winona Ryder,which climbed nine places to 10th in its second weekend on $1.2m for$1.8m. Richard Linklater directed.

Elsewhere it was all about consolidation. Warner Bros' Superman Returns ranks fourth on $163.6m after three weekends; Fox's TheDevil Wears Prada stands in fifthplace on $83.6m after three; Buena Vista/Pixar's Cars ranks sixth on $219.7m after six; and Sony's Click is seventh on $119.7m after four.

Overall box office fell short of the same period last year for the first timein a couple of months, as the top 12 combined titles dipped 5% on $156m.

Next weekend's wide releases are Fox's comedy My Super Ex-Girlfriend starring Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson; MGM's comedysequel Clerks 2 from Kevin Smith;Sony's animated feature Monster House with vocal work by Steve Buscemi; and Warner Bros' M Night Shyamalanmystery Lady In The Water, whichstars Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard.
