Imprisoned director Roman Polanski has lost his appeal to be freed on bail from a Swiss prison ahead of his possible extradition to the United States.

The Swiss Criminal Court said that releasing Polanski on bail or under house arrest prompted a serious risk that he might try and flee the country. His previous bail request was turned down on October 6.

Polanski can now appeal the verdict at Switzerland’s highest tribunal, the Federal Supreme Court.

The director was arrested as he arrived in Switzerland on September 26 to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival.
