Protagonist Pictures has sold key European territories on Gareth Edwards’ first feature Monsters. Deals have been concluded with Square One Entertainment for Germany, SND for France, Front Row for the Middle East. In CIS, Timur Bekmambetov and Sergei Yershov’s Film Depot jointly acquired the film.

The deals were done ahead of Cannes market screenings.

Head of Sales Charlotte Van Weede negotiated the deals in France, Germany and the Middle East on behalf of Protagonist. The Russian acquisition was negotiated by Nada Cirjanic with Yershov of the Film Depot and director/producer Bekmambetov (Night Watch).

Bekmambetov said: “Gareth is an emerging filmmaker whose raw and powerful talent is showcased by his confident direction and the deft handling of the film’s effects. His visual style is unmistakable and this film is sure to serve as a calling card as he builds his body of work.”

The film is about a NASA probe returning to earth with alien life samples, that crashed over Central America. New life forms emerge and half of Mexico is quarantined, causing an infected zone near the U.S. border.

The sci-fi drama premiered at SXSW, where Magnolia took rights to North America and Mexico.

Edwards wrote and directed, and Allan Niblo and James Richardson produced for Vertigo Films (which will release in the UK and Ireland). The cast features Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able.

Protagonist has world sales rights.
