Comment on: Disney making 'Frozen 2'
This may be the least surprising production announcement ever. Of course they are developing a sequel.
Great choice, good guy. Funnily enough I first met Matt while I was in Locarno for Screen International about nine years ago. Was first time at that festival and, though working for a different publication, Matt gave me some useful pointers and help.
Comment on: Globes joy for Boyhood, Budapest
Very pleased with the wins for Fargo and Billy Bob Thornton. As a huge Coens fan I approached this series with trepidation but it turned out to be the best television of 2014. Far better than the drawn-out, over-rated True Detective.
Comment on: BAFTAs 2015: Selma, Unbroken among shutouts
Well said Darren. Actor was especially tough this year. I had a short-list of 10 that "HAD" to be nominated, but that has to be cut to 5 these days now only 2 rounds of voting (it used to be 12 in 1st round when 3 rounds). It is no reflection on the excellence of actors like Cooper in American Sniper, Spall in Mr Turner, Oyelowo in Selma, Gleeson in Calvary etc. It was a very tough year. I also find it a bit insulting that articles like this so often phrase Gyllenhaal's mesmerizing turn in Nightcrawler as if it is a surprise. Not only is this (like J.K. Simmons' supporting role in Whiplash) one of the best performances from an actor or either gender in any role all year but he has already received SAG and Globe noms too. His is one of the best performances of the year, only really rivalled by Redmayne and Keaton.
Comment on: Fox soars to $5.5bn 2014 BO
Fox's IBO in 2014 was a staggering achievement. It seemed that their international team never put a foot wrong from building significantly on franchises to the amazing international success of Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel (which grossed more internationally than all 7 of Anderson's previous films combined). Congrats. Hope everyone got hefty bonuses.
