LosAngeles-based visual technology company REAL D has acquired stereoscopichardware and software manufacturer StereoGraphics Corporation in a bid toestablish an industry standard for next generation projection.

REAL Dexecutives plan to use StereoGraphics' 25-year history of working with thelikes of NASA and Boeing to service the entertainment industry and provide analternative to in-home theatres, cable and DVD.

Unliketraditional 3D projection technology, which requires two projectors, the REAL Dmodel allows a single digital projector to play the highest qualitystereoscopic content while remaining fully compatible with existing and future2D digital formats.

"For decades,the scientific, medical and manufacturing industries have relied onStereoGraphics' patented technology to advance their research and development,"Joshua Greer, REAL D chief executive officer said in a statement.

"Now, REAL D isapplying these advancements achieved by StereoGraphics to architect theunparalleled visual experiences for audiences everywhere."

StereoGraphicsfounder Lenny Lipton will become chief technology officer of REAL D.
