In the 1990s at the Comedy Film Festival in Vevey, Switzerland, I had the strange-but-nifty experience of sitting in front of Geraldine Chaplin and her young daughter as we all watched a Chaplin feature.
I was acutely aware of the fact that the man-cum-film-genius on screen was this woman's actual father -- and that she was laughing as if she were experiencing his antics for the very first time. Her daughter giggled with glee.
It is, as you describe, a pleasantly heightened way of watching a film. --
