From romantic comedies to action films to documentaries, John Hazelton profiles forthcoming films that could cross over with older cinema-goers.

The Big Wedding (US)

Wedding-themed stories often attract multi-generational audiences and this comedy’s cast - Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried and Susan Sarandon - should bolster that appeal. De Niro and Keaton play a divorced couple who pretend to still be married at their adopted son’s wedding in order to please the guest of honour - his religious birth mother. Justin Zackham, writer of The Bucket List, wrote the script and directs. Lionsgate is set to release the film in the US in April and in the UK in May.

Shirley MacLaine - hot from Downton Abbey - and Christopher Plummer - a 2012 Oscar winner for Beginners - star with a supporting cast that includes James Brolin and George Segal. Director Michael Radford recently wrapped in Louisiana.

Nebraska (US)

Director Alexander Payne has dealt with older characters before - notably in About Schmidt - and he recruited Bruce Dern to star in this drama about a booze-addled father who travels from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son (Will Forte) to claim a million dollar prize. Currently in production, the film is expected to open in the US through Paramount towards the end of the year, when it could become an awards contender.

Red 2 (US)

DC Comics-based action comedy Red tapped into the older audience in 2010 and grossed nearly $200m worldwide. Summit Entertainment will hope to repeat the trick with the sequel, in which the team of retired CIA operatives takes on a new set of enemies across Europe. Returning stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Mary-Louise Parker are joined in the sequel - set for US and UK release in August - by Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and David Thewlis.
