Weinstein was joined by Michael Flatley in making the announcement and said the event would be in the vein of the Grammy Awards and would take place around April or May.
Harvey Weinstein is joining forces with the Irish American dance impresario to launch the Grammy-style World Dance Awards, the producer and distributor announced at MIPCOM on Tuesday (Oct 9).
Weinstein made the announcement during his Media Mastermind Keynote at MIPCOM, inviting Flatley on stage to present the idea.
“It’s a dream come true which has taken too long to happen,” said Flatley. “We hope it will appeal to millions and millions of kids from around the world who dance, of every nationality. The best thing about the show is its large demographic – from five to 95, dance appeals to all ages.”
“I see this as a very powerful, fast-moving show which perhaps runs two hours featuring ten key awards, such as best dance on film, on video… world’s greatest dancer,” said Flatley, who admitted the format was in the early stages of development.
Weinstein said the event would be in the vein of the Grammy music awards or the Golden Globes.
“We’ve seen shows like the Golden Globes generate audiences of some 300m worldwide,” said Weinstein. “It will be a game changer for whichever network buys this show.”
Weinstein said the date had yet to be pinned down but that it would be some time around April or May, after the Golden Globes and Academy Awards but before the Cannes Film Festival.
