A year ago, LAMDA-trained Robert Emms did not see himself in film. “I just wanted to be one of those actors who works at the National Theatre the whole time,” he says.
He took a step towards that goal when he was cast in War Horse on its transfer from the National to London’s West End. Then Steven Spielberg saw the stage show and was so convinced Emms had a future in film, he wrote the actor into his upcoming version of War Horse (amalgamating a role from the stage play and one from the book). Next up, he plays Thomas Dekker in Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous (with fellow Star of Tomorrow Sebastian Armesto). “It is a cameo role that you want to make colourful, so he has big curly hair and a high-pitched giggle,” says Emms. That will be followed by a role in Tarsem Singh’s upcoming The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, with Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Emms will spend the summer on location in Canada. “I feel really, really lucky,” he says. “This doesn’t happen to most actors.”
