Sony's action title Ghost Rider held on to top spot at the North American box office in its second weekend, fending off New Line's new psycho-thriller The Number 23, which had to make do with the number two.

The Marvel Comics adaptation added an estimated $19.7m to raise the tally to a highly respectable $78.7m after 10 days. The Number 23, which stars Jim Carrey as a man obsessed with numerology, grossed $15.1m, one place ahead of Bridge To Terabithia on $13.6m for $46.2m after two weekends.

Twentieth Century Fox's comedy Reno 911!: Miami opened in fourth place on $10.4m, while Paramount's Eddie Murphy vehicle Norbit slipped two places to fifth on $9.7m for $74.7m after three.

Warner Bros' romantic comedy Music And Lyrics is showing signs of premature old age and languishes in sixth place after two weekends on an underwhelming $32.1m.

The Astronaut Farmer, a lighthearted drama starring Billy Bob Thornton and Virginia Madsen, opened in ninth place through Warner Independent Pictures on $4.5m.

Historical drama Amazing Grace, which stars Ioan Gruffudd as the British abolitionist William Wilberforce, opened in 10th through Samuel Goldwyn Films/Roadside Attractions on $4.3m.

Next weekend's wide releases are: Buena Vista's comedy Wild Hogs starring John Travolta and William H Macy; Paramount's serial killer thriller Zodiac starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr; and Paramount Vantage's drama Black Snake Moan with Samuel L Jackson and Christina Ricci.
