Ten world premieres areamong the line-up of more than 100 pictures for the 18th Santa BarbaraInternational Film Festival (SBIFF), which also features three new competitivesections - American Independent, Documentary and International. Announcing theprogramme today (Jan 29), SBIFF's new executive director Jon Fitzgerald saidthe event would also screen 11 US premieres and eight foreign-language Oscarsubmissions and feature three new sidebars - Journey To Italy, Showcase PlanetEarth and Surf Sessions. Additional festival programmes including OpeningNight, Modern Master, Celebrity Tributes, Closing Night, panels and others willbe unveiled shortly. The SBIFF runs from Feb 28-Mar 9.
Featured in the line-up are:Divine Intervention, EliaSuleiman's story of lovers from Jerusalem and Ramallah who stage secret trysts;The Magdalene Sisters, PeterMullan's award-wining account of a brutal Catholic asylum in 1960s Ireland; MyVoyage To Italy, Martin Scorsese'shomage to some of his favourite films; Irreversible, Gaspar Noe's controversial drama starring MonicaBellucci and Vincet Cassel; Stevie,Hoop Dreams film-maker SteveJames' account of the aftermath of family breakdown; Dirty Pretty Things, Stephen Frears' acclaimed London-set drama; and theworld premiere of The Day My God Died, Andrew Levine's account of the child sex trade in South Asia.
