Dimension's Scary Movie 3 galvanised the box office over the weekend with a stunning$49.7m number one opening that was easily the biggest October bow of all time,while Paramount/Mandalay Pictures' epic love story Beyond Borders flopped outside the top 10.

The horror spoof averaged $14,189 from 3,503 sites and starsCharlie Sheen, Anna Faris and Queen Latifah. David Zucker directed the film,which garnered average reviews.

It was also the biggest opening for Miramax, which owns the genrelabel Dimension, overtaking the $42.4m scored by Scary Movie in 2000.

As New Line's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre slipped one place to second on $14.7mfor $51.2m in its second week, Columbia/Revolution's drama Radio opened third on $14m.

Directed by Michael Tollin, Radio is based on a 1966 Sports Illustratedarticle about a friendship between a retarded black youth and a football coach.

It averaged $4,554 from 3,074 venues and was on the receiving endof some harsh words from the critics. Cuba Gooding Jr, Ed Harris and DebraWinger star.

Beyond Borders opened in 11th place and poor reviews on $2m. Starring Clive Owenand Angelina Jolie, the story centres on a romance between a socialite and adisaster relief worker. Martin Campbell directed and Beyond Borders averaged $1,112 from 1,798 sites.

Paramount's considerably more successful comedy School Of Rock continued to do well, adding $6.5m for$63.4m in its fourth week.

Warner Bros' Mystic River stayed in fifth, adding $$7.6m for $24.6m in its thirdweek, while Miramax's Kill Bill Vol 1 plunged five places to seventh on $5.9m for $53.7m also inits third week.

Overall box office for the top 12 titles was $121.1m, up 39%against the same period last year.

Next weekend's releases include Miramax's The Human Stain, starring Anthony Hopkins and NicoleKidman; and 20th Century Fox's Alien director's cut re-issue, starring Sigourney Weaver, TomSkerritt and John Hurt.
