New to Screenbase this week is Libertador about the South American revolutionary Simon Bolivar as well as sci-fi thriller The Machine.

Shooting is currently underway in Spain on Alberto Arvelo’s Libertador with Édgar Ramírez starring as Simon Bolivar. The film will be told from his point of view, tracing his quests, epic military campaigns and vision to unify South America, based on the screenplay by Timothy Sexton. Maria Valverde, Imanol Arias, Danny Huston are also part of the cast.

The epic is produced by Venezuela’s Insurgentes as well as Spain’s San Mateo Film with further participation from Germany’s WMG Films and the US’ Silver Screen. Ramírez is executive producing alongside Christer von Lindequist.

Toby Stephens and Caity Lotz will star in The Machine, which will be directed by Caradog James and is set in the near future when the Ministry of Defence develops a robotic soldier. Shooting on the sci-fi thriller is scheduled to commence on July 23 in in and around Cardiff. John Giwa-Amu is producing for Red And Black Films with further financing being provided by the Film Agency For Wales, Ruby Moon Ltd, The Ideas Factory, Graham Associates and the Welsh Assembly Government.
