Rob Stewart's Sharkwater won the 12th Annual Gen Art Film Festival's Acura Grand Jury Feature Film Award and a $10,000 prize, while Phillip Van's High Maintenance took home $5,000 and the Acura Grand Jury Short Film Award.

Both film-makers also claimed the audience Gen Art Film Festival Audience Awards as the event came to a close in New York.

The Stargazer Award honouring break-out talent for excellence in acting went to Troy Schremmer for his performance in Mike Akel's Chalk. Previous Gen Art Film Festival break-out honourees include Zach Braff, Nick Stahl and Amanda Peet.

'This year's slate really resonated with our audience through its exploration of the passion, pain, relationships and responsibility humanity experiences on a daily basis,' Gen Art's vice president of film Jeffrey Abramson said.

'Audiences and filmmakers alike praised our festival's unique format for giving them unprecedented access to each other.'
