Harrison Ford will receive the 56th San Francisco International Film Festival’s2013 Peter J. Owens Award for excellence in acting.

Festival top brass made the surprise announcement on Apr 25 opening night.

For, who currently stars in 42 and will be seen later this year in Ender’s Game, will collect the honour on May 7. The Chicago native will attend a screening of one of his films followed by an on-stage conversation.

“The Bay Area is defined by individuals who do things their own way with a ton of personality, and a good dose of humility,” said San Francisco Film Society executive director of the Ted Hope. “Our past award recipients have set an incredibly high bar in terms of achievement, so when considering this year’s Peter J Owen’s recipient, we knew we had some big shoes to fill.

“When America dreams of a hero, we see Harrison Ford. For him to arrive here, directly following yet another number one box office success [42] is a huge thrill for film lovers everywhere.”
