Leading Spanish outfit 6 Sales has taken international sales rights to award-winning Spanish director Antonio Hernandez’s hotly anticipated $12m project Captain Thunder.

Based on a popular comic book series, the film follows the adventures of a 12th century knight called Captain Thunder (El Capitan Trueno) who travels the world fighting injustices, accompanied by his friends Crispin and Goliath.

Spanish star Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Resident Evil: Afterlife) is playing the lead role of Captain Thunder, Adrian Lamana (The Devil’s Backbone) has been cast as Crispin and Manuel Martinez (Estigmas) will play Goliath. Other key cast members include Natasha Yerovenko, Gary Piquer and Asier Etxiandia..

The film is being produced by Maltes Productions and Sorolla Films with backing from broadcasters TVE and Canal +. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International has taken Spanish theatrical rights and first option on US distribution.

Shooting has been going on across Spain since July and is currently taking place at the Ciudad De La Luz studios in Alicante, alongside The Orphanage director Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Impossible, starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, and Bruce Willis starrer The Cold Light Of Day

Hernandez’ previous films include family drama En La Ciudad Sin Limites, starring Leonardo Sbaraglia and Geraldine Chaplin, which won best screenplay at the Goya awards in 2003, and Lisboa, starring Carmen Maura and Sergi Lopez, who won best actor at the Malaga Film Festival in 1999.

6 Sales will be promoting Captain Thunder for the first time at AFM in November.
