Spain'sFilmanova Invest has signed on to co-produce T&C Film's Portovero fromSwiss director Daniel Schmid and writer Barry Gifford.

The mystery-laden tale set in a fictitious port city, wherea married woman invents a second identity in order to embark on an affair, willshoot partially in Spain's Galicia region next autumn.

Schmid, director of 1999 Cannes Un Certain Regard entry TheLast Days Of Switzerland (Beresina), co-wrote the script with Gifford (WildAt Heart).

The film adds to a growing slate of European co-productionsat Filmanova, including Berlin competition entry One Day In Europe and atwo-picture deal with Denmark's Zentropa starting with Anton Reixa's HotelTivoli, to begin shooting later this month.

"European cinema's future lies in looking beyond borders,"said Reixa, co-founder of Filmanova. The company's other area of focus is LatinAmerica, where it recently co-produced Jorge Gaggero's Sundance special juryprize-winner Live-In Maid (Cama Adentro) and Juan Taratuto's It's NotYou It's Me (No Sos Vos Soy Yo), a hit in its native Argentina with morethan 220,000 admissions to date.

New projects with both Gaggero and Taratuto are in theworks, Reixa said. Filmanova Invest is also currently co-producing Spanishveteran Jaime Chavarri's in-production flamenco biopic Camaron
