Alex de la Iglesia's black comedy Common Wealth (La Comunidad) and Jose Luis Garci's black-and-white period tale You're The One led the list of nominees for Spain's Goya awards, announced today in Madrid by the Spanish Cinema Academy.

Common Wealth, which won kudos at the San Sebastian International Film Festival last September and looks set to spawn an English-language remake, was nominated in 15 categories, including best film, best director and best original script.

Trailing by just one nomination - more than compensated for by its selection to represent Spain for the foreign-language Oscar - is Garci's moody drama, also competing for best film, best director and best original script. Also vying for the top three awards is Jose Luis Borau's urban drama Leo.

Jaime Chavarri's 1960's coming-of-age tale Kisses For Everyone (Besos Para Todos) is up for six Goyas, including best director. Actor Achero Manas' directorial debut Pellet (El Bola) clocked in at five nominations including best film, best new director and best original script. The heart-wrenching child abuse drama was also a favourite at San Sebastian.

Manas will face stiff competition against fellow new director nominees Daniel Monzon for sci-fi action flick The Warrior's Heart (El Corazon Del Guerrero), Cesc Gay for coming-of-age tale Krampack and Patricia Ferreira for psychological drama I Know Who You Are (Se Quien Eres).

In a year sporting a good number of women-driven Spanish films, competition will also be tight for best actress nominees Adriana Ozores (Plenilunio), Carmen Maura (Common Wealth), Iciar Bollain (Leo) and Lydia Bosch (You're The One). Up for best actor are Carmelo Gomez (The Goalkeeper/El Portero), Juan Diego Botto (Plenilunio), Juan Luis Galiardo (Goodbye From The Heart/Adios Con El Corazon) and Miguel Angel Sola (I Know Who You Are).

Overall, the list carried few surprises and there are no clear winners. One nail-biting moment of the February 3 awards ceremony, held this year in Madrid, might be the best supporting actress and actor prizes. Fellow You're The One cast members Ana Fernandez and Julia Gutierrez Caba face off for best supporting actress, while the film's Inaki Miramon and Juan Diego compete for best supporting actor.

Several critically well-received films were overlooked in the nominations, including Laura Manas' Compassionate Sex (Sexo Por Compasion), Gerardo Herrero's The Reasons Of My Friends (Las Razones De Mis Amigos), Mariano Barroso's Kasbah, and Javier Corcuera's documentary The Back Of The World (La Espalda Del Mundo).

In the competition for best European film are Dancer In The Dark, Chicken Run, Private Encounters and East Is East. Up for best foreign Spanish-language film are Waiting List (Lista De Espera), Pantaleon And The Visitors (Pantaleon Y Las Visitadoras), Plata Quemada and Ratas, Ratones, Rateros.
