Raising the stakes in the competitive Spanish rights acquisitions market, start-up Planeta 2010 has acquired all Spanish rights to Sins Of The Father, starring Andy Garcia.

Sins, currently shooting in Canada, marks the first major North American product to be picked up by Planeta, the media division of publishing giant Grupo Planeta. The company recently struck a long-term distribution deal with United International Pictures (UIP) under which the Spanish company is expected to cover p&a costs for films while UIP handles physical distribution.

Sins, directed by Tom McLoughlin, is a thriller produced through New Legend Media. Global Pictures is handling international sales.

Garcia plays a psychiatrist trying to uncover the childhood secrets of a teenage patient, played by Vincent Kartheiser. Linda Cardellini and Teri Polo round out the cast.

Planeta has so far carved a niche for itself in genre titles, including French production Deep In The Woods, Ed Gein, The Convent and Ginger Snaps. Planeta Junior handles children's titles, such as The Seagull And The Cat (La Gabbianella E Il Gatto).
