JUNE 8 UPDATE: A confirmed $29.1m debut for Fox’s Melissa McCarthy action comedy was enough to consign San Andreas to second place as Entourage failed to ignite in fourth place.

Spy

Spy reunites McCarthy with her Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig and had too much for the competition. Chernin Entertainment produced the film, which also stars Jason Statham, Rose Byrne and Jude Law.

Warner Bros-New Line’s San Andreas added $25.8m for $98.5m after two weekends and is already a huge hit internationally, while Blumhouse Pictures and Focus’ Gramercy Pictures label opened the horror staple Insidious: Chapter 3 at number three on a solid $22.7m.

Warner Bros top brass will be disappointed with the $10.3m number four debut of Entourage, which failed to connect with theatre-goers in the way the HBO series has done so spectacularly.

The regular cast of Adrien Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara and Jeremy Piven star.

Roadside Attractions launched Bill Pohald’s Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy starring John Cusack, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti on $2.1m from 480 theatres.

Eros debuted Dil Dhadakne Do on $1.3m from 238, while SPC launched Testament Of Youth on $53,000 from four sites.

Venice 2014 Golden Lion winner A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence opened via Magnolia on $25,313 from two venues.

Box office for the top 12 fell 6.4% against last weekend and roughly 21.1% versus the comparable session in 2014, when juggernaut The Fault In Our Stars opened top on $48m.

This week’s wide release is Jurassic World through Universal starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Colin Trevorrow directed.
